October/November 2007
The focus of this issue of the Georgia Engineer Magazine is Governmental Affairs. Many of the articles deal with timely subject matter of interest to the general public, and especially to the readers of this magazine.

What comes to mind when you think of Governmental Affairs? The unfortunate collapse of the Interstate 35 Bridge in Minnesota over the Mississippi River, the congested traffic that you are caught in during your commute to work, the continued drought or maybe what the state and federal government has in store for GeorgianÕs in 2008?

On the heels of the Interstate 35 bridge collapse, the 2003 ASCE Infrastructure Report Card provides an overall summary and reminder of GeorgiaÕs needs and the associated cost to upgrade the existing bridges. The report card also covers wastewater, stormwater, drinking water, energy, dams, schools, transit, airports, roads and solid waste. ÒWeÕll Cross That Bride When WE Come to ItÓ article provides background on how bridge inspection evolved within the Georgia Department of Transportation. ÒA Crack in the DamÓ article is written with a national perspective on improving the same infrastructure.

There are 159 counties in Georgia and the approximately 500 cities continued to grow with the recent addition of Sandy Springs, Johns Creek and Milton. Would the 4 cent sales tax on engineering services impact your job? Would the governmental requirement to withhold three percent of payments to vendors impact your company? How will metro Atlanta continue to keep pace with the infrastructure requirements if we continue to be the fastest growing major metropolitan area in the country?

As always, we always include articles of general interest to help inform you of current engineering related happenings. Please contact your association representative or the publisher with ideas and/or constructive criticism that will help the magazine continue to improve.
