Public transportation issues will be reviewed in light of Atlanta's continued rapid growth.

In depth understanding of the American difficulties of building an effective passenger rail system.

Technology in Engineering
This is a new section in which we will endeavor to search for the latest events in the technology of building and changes in the construction process for greater efficiency in the development of infrastructure. Also the latest from the software industry on design and project management as well as communication advances in the supervision and control of projects not necessarily within easy reach of your office.

A better understanding of the process of bidding for international projects. The growth opportunities in such places as China, India and even in Africa much of which is being funded by the World Bank or other international banking organizations such as the European Investment Bank.

In short an opportunity issue for our engineering community seeking to balance economic fluctuations at home with possible project opportunities elsewhere.

Natural Resources and the Environment
Environmental issues, water, air, gas and fossil fuels. Power generation and resource management. The growth of Georgia under sustainable limits. The growth and research on renewable resources, funding and alternative opportunities. The water discussion will continue - and now the saga of the Atlanta sewer renewal program.

Energy supplies - discussions with executives of Georgia major utilities on the sufficiency of supplies. The World Energy Council and the review of the global energy needs - including the third world.

 

 

October | November 2006

 

The Business of Engineering
A complete analysis of the opportunities and the business environment of engineering. Women in engineering and other improvements at the Engineering schools of Georgia's universities, governmental building plans and corporate initiatives. Mathcounts and other plans to get children involved in mathematics and engineering at an early age.
The Georgia Registration Board. Licensure for engineers, land surveyors, and architects. An update on rules and regulations and changes for all licensed professionals.

Finance, accounting and marketing in our times. Software developments and other technical changes in the way engineering services are being conducted.

 

 

December | January 2006/5

 

Government Affairs
This is a new section, introduced for the first time with the December/January issue 2003. Each year at this time we will want to look at the election results and make some assumptions what they may mean for the A/E/C community. Trends in governmental infrastructure spending and such funding as may be contemplated by the Board of Regents for the State university system.

We will take a moment to look at the economic conditions and as they will influence the private sector plans for new investments in plants and equipment.

What influence does a lobbyist really have in the halls of Congress on the national level and on the State level.

 

TGE General

Each issue of The Georgia Engineer will cover aspects of engineering other than those described above. The emphasis will be on the events which might take place at any given moment. News from The Registration Board will always form a part of the magazine. The members of the Editorial Board may from time to time change the direction of The Georgia Engineer to reflect the broader readership and interest groups receiving it.
